3 best ways to test seeds for germination at home

3 best ways to test seeds for germination at home

The yield of crops largely depends on the quality of the seed. Small and light seeds cannot give the germination the strength necessary for active growth, and therefore the plant from it will turn out to be frail. And some seeds may not sprout at all. Then you will have to reseed the beds, but time will already be lost. To avoid this problem, you need to check seed germination in advance.

What is seed germination and why check it

Seed germination is the ratio of the number of germinated seeds to the total number of planted seeds, expressed as a percentage. So, if 80 seeds sprout out of 100, then their germination rate is 80%. But at home, there is usually no need for accurate calculations: you just need to understand whether the material is suitable for sowing or not.

Seed germination testing is done when growing plants on a large scale and commercially. Gardeners often do without it. But in the following cases, it is necessary:

  • the seed is old and you need to understand whether it is capable of germinating;
  • it is necessary to calculate the consumption of seeds per unit area (with low germination, the consumption is greater, with high - less);
  • it is necessary before the sowing date to understand whether there is enough material to obtain a certain amount of plants (if germination is low, then the seeds will have to be bought).

Germination testing can be done for any crop. The procedure will help you determine the quality of the seed and understand if it is enough for sowing, or if you need to buy more.

Methods for testing seeds for germination: description, advantages, disadvantages

There are various methods for testing seed germination. But they are not universal: each method is suitable only for specific crops.

Fast (ascending)

The advantage of this method is speed. The disadvantage is the inaccuracy of the results, since they depend on the density of the seed, which differs depending on the crop. To check the validity of the seeds in this way:

  1. Pour 1 glass of water into the jar.
  2. Dip the seeds into it.
  3. Stir with a spoon.
  4. Evaluate the result in 4-5 minutes.

The seeds of tomato, radish and cabbage are quite dense and heavy. Therefore, when checking for suitability in plain water, both good and bad can end up at the bottom. A saline solution will help to make poor-quality seeds float: during the experiment, add 1 tsp to the water. with a slide of salt.

Seeds that float to the surface are not suitable for sowing.

Those seeds that have surfaced will not sprout at all or will give seedlings of poor quality: you will not get a good harvest from these. Therefore, they can be drained along with the water. Those that remain at the bottom can be sown.

With germination

The advantages of the method are high accuracy, versatility (suitable for all crops). The disadvantage is the length of time (verification will take several days). To test germination in this way:

  1. Moisten a bandage or cotton pads with chilled boiled water.
  2. Wrap the seeds in a bandage or place between the two discs.
  3. Create a greenhouse environment by placing the bandage or discs in a jar or container with a lid.
  4. After a certain period, the duration of which depends on the type of culture, see how many seeds have sprouted.
  5. To determine the germination rate, divide the number of sprouted seeds by the number of soaked seeds, and then multiply by 100%.

To obtain accurate germination rates, the soaked seeds need to be provided with warmth: for this they are placed in a container or jar.

Table: terms of germination energy and determination of crop germination

CultureGermination energyDeadline for germination
Rutabaga, peas, cabbage, radishes, turnips37
Melon, cucumber38
Watermelon, pumpkin, beans, zucchini310
Beets, beans48
Carrots, salad510
A tomato612
Eggplant, rhubarb, spinach514
Parsnip, pepper, celery714

The germination energy shows on what day the seeds of the culture begin to sprout together.... If they have not sprouted after the expiration of the period specified in the "Deadline for germination" block, they will definitely not sprout.

The "magic" method for very small seeds

Verification of germination with the emergence or germination of very small seeds is difficult. To select the highest quality seed, it is convenient to use the ability of electrified bodies to attract others to itself.... The order of steps:

  1. Spread the seeds out on a piece of paper in a thin, even layer.
  2. Rub a plastic object (hairbrush or ruler) against the wool.
  3. Run an electrified object along the seeds at a distance of 10-15 mm from them.
  4. Remove stuck seeds.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 until the seeds are no longer attracted.

Only seeds that are unusable will be attracted. The largest and highest quality ones will remain on the sheet.

Seeds that are light and unsuitable for sowing will be attracted by an electrified comb or ruler, just like pieces of paper with an electrified ebonite stick.

Seed germination indicates what percentage of seedlings can be expected. According to this indicator, summer residents calculate how much seed material will be needed and whether it can be used for sowing at all. Check germination in advance to be able to sow crops on time.

How to determine seed germination?

The time of planting is approaching. Growers and gardeners are increasingly sifting through their seeds, checking stocks to determine what has not yet been purchased. And someone, on the contrary, has a lot of packages with seeds that have been lying for more than one year. Everyone knows that the longer the seeds lie, the worse they germinate when sown. That is why experienced gardeners check in winter not only the assortment of seeds, but also their quality. How to check the germination of seeds, we will tell in this article.

How to determine seed germination?

Reasons for poor germination

Even if the germination test has passed, the cucumbers may behave capriciously and not germinate. There are reasons for this:

  1. Errors in preparation for sowing did happen.
  2. Diseases and pests have had a negative impact. To prevent this from happening, the seeds must be disinfected.
  3. Lack of moisture.
  4. Low soil temperature.
  5. Poor land quality, waste and chemical pollution.
  6. Lack of nutrients and minerals in the soil.

Even with meticulous preparation, it is impossible to achieve 100% germination. Growth stimulants increase this indicator by only 20-35%. For cucumbers, the average germination time is 7-10 days. With some manipulations, it is reduced to 2-3 days.

Factors accelerating germination:

  • constant moderate humidity
  • room temperature from 20 ° C to 25 ° C
  • air access to containers with landing.

Some varieties of cucumbers require additional lighting. Information about this can be found on the manufacturer's packaging. To increase the amount of light, LED lamps are installed.

3 Easy Home Ways to Test Seed Germination

These validation options can be applied to most green and vegetable seeds that we grow on our plots. They are all simple but effective enough.

Option number 1

It is suitable for small seeds. For example, for turnips, carrots, sorrel, watercress, parsley, rhubarb, mustard, tomatoes, peppers, dill, eggplant. And also for garden flowers.

We take a saucer (a small plate is also suitable) and put paper napkins on it, which we then moisten well with water. We put no more than 10 seeds on these napkins, and cover them with polyethylene on top. Now the saucer with seeds needs to be put in a warm place. In such a warm place, the temperature should not be higher than +23 degrees.

We look at the seeds every day and, if necessary, moisten them with water. As the germination progresses, we make calculations. If out of 10 seeds sprouted, for example, 7, then the germination rate is 70%. The faster the seeds germinate, the more strength and energy they have. And this means that from such planting material in the garden it is worth waiting for friendly shoots.

Option number 2

Pour the seeds into a suitable container, fill them with water there, stir and let stand for 5-7 minutes. We immediately remove the seeds that remain floating on the surface. Most likely, they have dried out or deteriorated. And those that have settled to the bottom can be safely used for sowing. But, after such testing, they need to be dried at a temperature of + 20-25 degrees.

This test method is suitable for all seeds except radish, cabbage and tomato. They need to be checked for density and this should be done not in water, but in a solution of sodium chloride of 3 to 5 percent concentration.

Option number 3

The sawdust method will help to check the quality of seeds of peas, zucchini, pumpkin, beets, cucumbers, squash, beans, watermelon, beans and melon.

We process sawdust with boiling water. This should be done 2 or 3 times with an interval between each treatment of 25-30 minutes. After such processing, the sawdust is poured into trays or trays. We put seeds on the sawdust, the distance between which should be 1-1.5 centimeters. And between the rows of seeds - 2-3 centimeters. Top the seeds with sawdust and tamp them well. If the sawdust is not tamped, then instead of the cotyledons, the roots will come out through the sawdust. The germination temperature should be + 23-27 degrees.

Seed germination percentage. What should it be?

How seeds germinate, that is, their energy, is not determined in the same way over time. If these are seeds of zucchini, cabbage or radish, turnip, cucumber, pumpkin and sorrel, then they do it on the 3rd day. If salad, beans or peas, then on the 4th. If onions, carrots, beets or tomatoes, then on the 5th, and if pepper, spinach or parsley - only on the 7th.

Good seeds, that is, the germination of which corresponds to the norm, is also determined by the types of crops. Seed germination within 90 - 95%, which is good for cucumbers, turnips, peas, pumpkin, beans, as well as zucchini.

85% is an excellent result if you have tested radishes, tomatoes or cabbage.

80% You should show peppers, beets, onions or salad. Not less than 60 or 70 percent are obliged to give you good parsnip seeds, as well as carrots, parsley and all their "native" umbrella seeds.

It is quite possible that the germination of seeds will not reach these results, then you need to increase the sowing rate, or in general, these seeds will not be bought in the future.

And we watch 2 videos. The first one will tell and show how to carry out such a test in practice.

And from the second you will learn how to "wake up" old seeds.

Warming up and treatment with growth stimulants

Before determining the germination of seeds, they can be prepared. Warming up the seed and treatment with growth stimulants increase the energy of germination, accelerate the growth of vegetative mass, and improve the development of the root system of future plants. Purchased cucumbers are usually pre-prepared in production.

There are two types of seed heating:

The first method is needed primarily for "young" seeds harvested last year.

Warming up in warm water 50-60 ℃ for 30 minutes before sowing allows you to quickly awaken the cucumbers and is useful for increasing the vigor of germination and germination.

Such chemicals and vitamins are known for processing seed before sowing (based on 100 ml of water):

  • sodium humate - 10-20 mg
  • succinic acid - 0.4 mg
  • heteroauxin - 50 mg
  • nicotinic acid - 10 mg
  • thiamine - 10 mg.

The volume of the solution should be 2 times the volume of the seeds, the temperature is 17-18 ℃. The seed is soaked for 6-12 hours, then washed well and dried.

Germination refers to the percentage of planted seeds versus the number of emerging seedlings.
In other words, this is a common answer to the question of how many seeds will germinate after they are planted in the ground.

Gardeners know two types of germination.

They are defined in different ways:

  • The laboratory is determined in laboratory conditions. It is indicated in the seed passport.
  • The field is identified by the number of shoots already in the beds. It is almost always lower than the laboratory one.

Since there is never 100% germination, precise individual seeding is introduced for grain crops. If it turns out that about 10 percent of the seeds will not germinate, there is no reason to plant them in open ground.

Before planting carrots in the ground, it is imperative to check the seeds for germination.
This is the only way to be sure that they will sprout when planting, and to know with what reserve they need to be sown.

High rates, which are written on the package with seeds, are determined by laboratory germination. Therefore, they germinate ideally only under certain conditions that are difficult to set on your own. therefore field germination of carrots is always much lower

Cooking the ground and sowing

Experienced gardeners prepared the soil for spring seedlings in the fall and stored it in a cold place. Now you need to bring the soil home to keep it warm. If the soil has not been harvested, then it can be bought at any time in specialized stores.

For seedlings, boxes with drainage holes can be used. Some crops have a fragile root system, so they should be sown in separate containers - from pressed flour or plastic cups, peat and compost bags.

As a rule, two seeds are sown in one container.

Selected and popular varieties of seeds of remontant strawberries, giving aromatic and tasty berries from the beginning of summer to the very frost. If you love this beautiful berry, then you should definitely plant remontant strawberries, or even better, different varieties of it, in order to provide yourself with a variety of strawberries. The advantages of remontant strawberries over ordinary ones are that they are characterized by continuous flowering, and, consequently, long fruiting and a high yield. Such its features are explained by the ability to lay flower buds in spring, which develop in the same year, forming flowers, and then berries.

The best types of green manure seeds, which are grown as green fertilizers for land reclamation, creating a beautiful and lush lawn in the garden, lawns, fields, private farms, as well as fodder crops for cattle and domestic animals. Most often, plants are used for the purpose of their subsequent embedding in the soil to improve its structure, enrichment with nitrogen, nutrients, micro- and macro elements, to suppress the growth of weeds, as well as to generally improve the quality characteristics of the soil. At the same time, compost is formed on the surface, the soil is protected from erosion and blowing. Plant roots improve the mechanical structure of the soil: a system of root canals is created, worms and microbes that accumulate nitrogen feed on dead roots. In this section you can buy such types of green manure as: clover, alfalfa, phacelia and other species, the most widely used and popular varieties of universal use.
